It's What We Do

Memorial Day is such a good day. (if the weather is nice) Our day starts with the VFW flag raising and short program at the cemetery. It starts at 9am and usually has a nice turn out. We like to walk around the graves for awhile. It just gets you in the "memorial day" mood. I like to hear patriotic stories and try to get a little bit of insight, so we can truly appreciate our soldiers. It's just a good day to have a reverent moment to honor them as well as our other family members that have gone on before us.
This year we were caught up on the yard work a little bit, so we spent the day with family and just enjoying the day. It was good.

when i wake up in the morning on mem. day and 4th of july i always think of the flag raisings and i feel a little bit jealous that you get to go and i don't get to go any more.

(maybe i'm a little bit jealous of the sweetish pancakes we have afterwards too.)

I like Memorial Day too. I don't know why...it is kind of a weird holiday but for some reason I love getting flowers together to take to all the graves and the great discussions that happen in our family about what not to put on our headstones when we die. Good times.

From the picture, it looks like it was a beautiful day. Nice picture of the VFW too. I couldn't think of the name of the man next to Jay and I didn't even recognize the other two guys. I guess I have been away from Mud too long. I don't think I have been to a flag raising since I left Mud Lake either and now that you mention it, I think I miss that.

The man next to Jay is Orvin Twitchell (probably the most enthusiastic memeber of the post), then Lester Reiss, and his son who served in Iraq.

I love seeing the VFW in Mud Lake. When we stopped at the cemetery I noticed a flag at my mom and dad's grave. At first I wondered why, cuz he never was in the military. Then I knew it was put there in honor of Verle. When I see all the flags, it stirs my soul.
