Just Remembering

There's a sign out front at Geisler's Farm Supply this week.  "Baby Chicks are Here".  They've been closed every time I drove by, but I can just imagine the noise that those little chicks are making.  (and also the smell....actually not that bad)
When we worked at Furness Brothers, every spring we'd get to see the baby chicks.  It seemed so funny to me that on the weeks there weren't too many orders, the hatchery would just mail them, U.S. mail.  The post office would call us to come get them asap, though.  They are kinda noisy!  All six of us girls know how to raise chickens.  Grace still does it.   Every kid should get to hold a baby chick, though.  After they get big....not so fun or cute.

I was just talking to my school class about how they used to come in the mail because they don't need food or water for a couple of days. Everyone should know how to clean them too. Ellen

I saw that our farm store's sign said, "Chick days coming soon". I read it to Judd and he's so excited. We love going in and looking (and sneaking a hold) of the little chicks. He loves to look to see if there is a stray duck in one of the tubs.
I've waited nearly 17 years for my turn to have chicks/chickens. Maybe next spring...I'm closer than I ever have been.
(BTW-I can clean one, and it isn't the most awful thing....but I found a place that only charges $1.50/bird so I'm thinking I like that idea too.)

Baby chicks are the cutest for sure, but when they get a little older and start getting a few feathers, they are kind of freaky looking. Maybe it is like the Jr. High time of life for people; the peach fuzz, the pimples, the nose too big for the face, etc. I would have to brush up on things if I actually wanted to raise them, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to.

We always had baby chicks too that is the only time I really liked them. My mom loved to have them, it brings back lots of memories.
