With Jay being a Veteran, our family has always attended flag raisings and enjoyed this holiday. Then he had the great idea that we should sell fireworks from our front yard in 1980. That first year, we had our 4th child that spring and I was thinking, "What in the world am I going to do with $800.00 worth of fireworks?" So, I painted a 8 X 10 piece of wood all white, and spray painted the word "fireworks" on it in red spray paint. I drug that board out to the highway and propped it up with some firewood stumps and I immediately started getting calls from little boys....wanting to know if I had M-80's. I wondered what in the world those kids wanted to blow up. I never did sell M-80's, but we had lots of bottle rockets, firecrackers, roman candles, and all kinds of cool stuff. We sold everything that we had that year. So, the next year, when Cassie was 7 (and thought she could run the stand herself), we decided to get more. The fireworks went on from there and the kids knew how every firework performed. We loved them ourselves, and shot off our share. We had a neighbor boy that we would have help us weed the garden, then he'd head right over to the fireworks and spend his money. I think all of our kids and their friends and cousins have memories of selling fireworks in the summer. The money we earned bought our playground equipment in the yard, our pink Cadillac, sometimes paid our church building assessment, and the kids school clothes. When the kids lost interest in selling, and my fireworks guy had so many troubles that he kinda disappeared, we quit. It made me sad to tell the little boys that called me for the next few years...."sorry...no firecrackers".
I think the reason I especially love the 4th of July is because it's such a family day. Everything that day is for the whole family and that's great. Hope everybody had a great day and a great big THANKS to Mr. Melaleuca for the fireworks. As always, they were awesome!

That was a fun nostalgic post. It made me remember the year Grace didn't get up in time for the flag-raising and Dad threw a few firecrackers under her bed when we got back. He thought he was so funny and so did we. I don't remember what Grace thought.
I saw your yard on Becca's blog. It is so beautiful.
I LOVED coming to help "work" in the firework stand. I remember begging my mom to let me stay at your house during firework season. I bet we lit off as many fireworks as we sold though but it was so fun.
Selling fireworks is most of my childhood summer time memories. Mom's right. I did learn how to price things from a pile of freight pricing papers and count back change at a young age.
And now, 30 years later, the 4th is still one of my top holidays. For many many reasons, but who doesn't like a holiday that ends with 25 mintues of night time beauty and music?!!?!
(and this year I had the most wonderful watermelon of the season...so far. I just can't get over how great that one was.)
They were extra long this year huh?! Becca is right though.... the music was dumb! Ah well, still a good show. Even Mia enjoyed herself!
Thanks for the wonderful night and food mom. You always do a GREAT job hosting and we love you living so close!
Oh yeah, and i am sorta sad we stopped selling fireworks too. I loved feeling so cool when some of the local kids would come buy a couple bucks worth and I just knew they were so jealous! Didn't that guy you bought them from end up in jail for some reason?
I, too, love the 4th! I especially like a good parade, with soldiers marching with the flag. Makes me feel very patriotic!
Those were the fun days, my kids thought it was so great to come down every year to buy & to celebrate with all of you life was so good in Mud Lake then everyone grew up, but look at all our wonderful families!!! Lucy thank you for the birthday wish you are the best friend anyone could have thank you for all the great years of fun!!!
